Lao Sai Tao Yuan Teochew Opera Troupe is probably the only active and surviving Teochew Street Wayang performing group in Singapore. I get to know about them via social media, and I decided to follow on one of their performance to find out what makes them so unique and still standing strong until today.

All performance was done on a small wooden stage which was setup temporarily. The back stage and the front stage are linked and divided by the backdrop of the show. Usually there will be two shows per day, one in the afternoon and one in the evening. The people from the troupe are very friendly, and they welcome people to take pictures for both backstage preparation and actual performance.

Chinese opera show is usually accompanied by traditional musical instrument, together with bright and fancy clothing and props. And for Lao Sai Tao Yuan, they certainly does not skimp on budget for the props and costumes. For each individual scene, they have dedicated backdrop to bring out the story as well.

After much rehearsal and preparation, the show started. From the performance, it can be clearly seen that a lot of practice and effort has been put in to present the show. Public are welcome to watch the show, and I would encourage parents to bring along their children to witness the essence and tradition of Chinese local culture. Their dedication to the culture and tradition is indeed deserve our applause and salute.
